You’re Invited to a Celebration of the Legacy of Frederick Douglass and Transcribe-a-thon for Black History!

Born enslaved, Frederick Douglass emancipated himself at the age twenty and quickly became one of the preeminent intellectuals and activists of the nineteenth century. Although he never knew his birth date, he chose to celebrate every year on February 14th.

Together with digital scholarship centers around the country, we celebrate this day with a transcribe-a-thon to create and preserve Black history.

The 2024 Douglass Day transcribe-a-thon will feature the Frederick Douglass Papers: General Correspondence (1841-1912), housed at the Library of Congress. Volunteers like you will transcribe pages from the collection, uncover details about Douglass' life and make them available to all.

Drop in any time! We’ll also enjoy birthday cake & music!
