Title:  Rethinking Particle Physics Experiments

Host:  Jim Alexander

Abstract:  The challenges facing the next generation of particle physics experiments are exceedingly demanding. One contributor to this situation is the fact that many of today’s experiments are reaching their design sensitivity deploying current technologies and scaling to ever larger volumes is becoming economically not feasible. Another factor is the fact that proposed new experiments create or study experimental conditions that are not met by current instrumentation capabilities. Exploration of novel ideas for instrumentation are required to adequately address the open fundamental questions about the nature of energy and matter in the universe. In this presentation the challenges facing the current experimental particle physics program will be described and ample challenges will be provided for creative young physicists to tackle.
