Dairy Month Field Trip at East Meadow Farm


Dates available:  May 30th,June 6th, June 8th, June 13th and June 15th 


Time slots available for each day:
AM Session:  9:30am - 11:30am
PM Session: 12:30pm - 2:30pm


We can accommodate up to classrooms that are approx. 40 children + plus staff


Description:


Students can come and visit us at East Meadow Farm to learn more about the ruminate animals they learned about for 6 weeks by participating in new and fun hands-on activities, including smoothie making, a milking demonstration and a farming activity to help connect students to the value-added products we enjoy from ruminates on a daily basis and send them off into summer with some healthy choices.


Program (example is for AM session, PM session is the same activities):


9:30am - Arrive at EMF 


Brief intro to the children, break into 2 groups. Each group will rotate between 2, 30-minute stations and then join back together for the last 30-minute station for a goat milking demonstration.



9:40am-10:10am- Station 1: Smoothie bike (*30 minutes, inside East Meadow building) 


Students will make a healthy, dairy based snack: 


Plain yogurt, customized with 3 flavor options:



  • Strawberry

  • Banana

  • Blueberry


*Once macerated, Students will choose a flavor and take it over to the toppings bar to customize their snack:



  • local honey  

  • Granola      

  • Assorted fruits


10:15am-10:45am- Station 2: Farming in a glove (*30 minute, outside under the tent)



  • Discuss diet of the ruminate animal

  • Have feed samples

  • Each student will receive a booklet and the materials to plant their own ‘farms’

    • A glove

    • 5 cotton balls, soaked in water

    • 5 different feeds for crops        




10:50am-11:20am-Station 3: Goats (*30minutes, outside under the gazebo) =everyone



  • Take out one baby goat or ‘KID’

  • Talk about the kid, ask questions such as " What do you see?”

  • Tell the children about what the goats will eat and drink

  • Talk about where they sleep, and what they sleep on in the barn

  • Students will get to watch a demonstration of how goats are milked.
     


11:20- 11:30: 



  • Everyone meets up outside on the patio

  • End of day Q&A and reflection chat  
     


11:30 pm - Bus departure
