Sunday, February 28, 2021
About this Event
- Monday, February 1-Friday, February 28
- Registration Available through Friday, January 29
Join Cornell Wellness for the month of February, as we celebrate the culture and traditions of our African-American brothers and sisters. Starting on Monday, February 1st, join Nutrition & General Health Outreach Educator, Jeremy Stewart, as he sits down with a number of Black staff and faculty from around campus to discuss a number of health-related issues and topics. We will discuss issues that are primarily prevalent in the BIPOC community and what we can do to be proactive in living a healthy lifestyle. Week 1 will focus on awareness of the health disparities that we see in predominately Black communities; diseases such as cardiovascular, diabetes, as well as cancer and cancer mortality rates. We will hear courageous, educational, and inspiring stories from members of the Cornell community and how they have implemented healthy lifestyle choices to overcome these obstacles. We will also hear from Dr. John Clarke to talk about COVID and its disproportionate effect on the black community. We will also hear from Catherine Thrasher- Carroll to address barriers and stigmas surrounding mental health in black culture. The second through the last week, Jeremy will sit down with members from the Cornell community, as well as a guest appearance from Mayor Svante Myrick, to talk about how Wellness has played a role in their life and how they’re taking proactive measures to protect themselves from the health disparities that effect specifically the BIPOC community. Register to get an email each day with your interview of the day and also receive a trivia question that relates to a person who has had a positive impact on Black History with a link to a detailed bio of that individual. For more information on this campaign, please contact Jeremy Stewart via email.
