Are We Alone in the Universe?
Abstract: For sixty years astronomers have been sweeping the skies with radio telescopes hoping to stumble across a message from an alien civilization. So far, there is only an eerie silence. So are we looking for the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time, or might we actually be alone in the universe? The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, forms part of the broader subject of astrobiology, which has reached a critical phase. Just how a mish-mash of chemicals can turn into life, with its unique information-management capabilities, remains one of the great unsolved problems of science.
