Contemporary Law and Politics Series: Campus as Civic Space
Thursday, November 13, 2025 7pm to 8pm
About this Event
647 Stewart Ave, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA
The attacks of October 7th and the subsequent destruction of Gaza have sparked debates in the US about how US universities are responding to the war and to escalating concerns about violations of human and humanitarian rights. Student-led campaigns have put pressure on universities to take action – to divest, boycott, speak out, cut ties. At the same time, the Trump Administration’s executive order conflating protests against the war on Gaza with antisemitism includes calls for government agencies to impose civil and criminal penalties on protestors, including students. Professor Sandra Babcock, a human rights lawyer and a Clinical Law Professor at the Cornell Law school, will join us to lead a discussion of the obligations of US universities’ in the current moment. Should universities speak out and ‘take a stand’ on contemporary political matters? How should universities define the boundaries of acceptable speech when it comes to politically charged conflicts? She’ll facilitate a conversation about campus as a civic space in an era of contentious politics. Please grab your dinner and join us in the seminar room at 7pm!
