Title: Toward an understanding of the phonon Hall effect

Speaker: Avi Shragai (Ramshaw Group)

Abstract: The electrical Hall effect in metals is well-understood: charged electrons feel a Lorentz force and their trajectories are bent as they carry current in a magnetic field. The recently discovered phonon Hall effect, in which charge-neutral sound waves rather than electrons are deflected by a magnetic field, remains a mystery. In this talk we will discuss some recent thermal transport data as well as our efforts to determine the mechanism of the phonon Hall effect using pulse echo ultrasound.
