How Dynamics of Statistical Learning Affects Skill Acquisition: the Cases of Dyslexia and Autism

Abstract:

Our acquisition of expertise is based on familiarity with the trained tasks and their related stimuli. This familiarity is acquired by learning statistics of taskrelevant stimuli.
Long term acquisition enables familiarity with stable aspects (e.g., statistics of syllables in language) whereas flexibility is based on fast adaptation (e.g., surprising responses in social contexts).
I shall discuss the atypicality in learning dynamics of people with dyslexia and people with autism and show it can explain difficulties in their linguistic and social skills, respectively (Gertsovski & Ahissar TICS 2026).
