DESCRIPTION:Presented by Karim-Aly Kassam (Department of Natural Resources
& American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program\, Cornell University)\n\n
Indigenous and rural societies who have contributed least to anthropogenic
climate change are facing its harshest consequences and for them climate
change is one of the greatest challenges. But an estimated 70-80% of the w
orld’s food is produced by the same smallholders with less than two hect
ares of land. Therefore\, climate variability is disrupting food systems a
nd generating a debilitating anxiety. Consequently\, anticipatory capacity
–the ability to envision possible futures and develop a plan of action t
 o deal with uncertainties–is needed urgently.\n\n-----------------------
 ------------------------------------------\n\nThe 2019 Cornell University
Climate Change Seminar meets Monday afternoons through May 6. This univers
ity-wide seminar provides important views on the critical issue of climate
change\, drawing from many perspectives and disciplines. Experts from Cor
nell University and other universities will present an overview of the sci
ence of climate change and climate change models\, the implications for ag
riculture\, ecosystems\, and food systems\, and provide important economic
\, ethical\, and policy insights on the issue.\n\nThe seminar is free and
open to the Cornell and Ithaca Community at large.\n\nOrganized and sponso
red by the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering\, the Co
rnell Institute for Climate Smart Solutions\, and the Atkinson Center for
 a Sustainable Future.
