Affect and Afterlife: The Emotional Life of the Dead

Death is often framed in terms of loss—loss of life, loss of body, and loss of sight; however, in ancient Greek literature, discussions of the afterlife often focus on the elements of existence that are preserved, such as relationships and emotions. Despite their lack of memory or physical bodies, the dead are represented as having a remarkable range of emotions towards their own lives and the stories they hear from others they encounter in the afterlife. This talk explores how the language and assumptions of human emotion persist across the life-death divide and inform ancient views about human identity and memory.
