Have you ever wanted to write about your research, but for a magazine instead of an academic journal? Effectively communicating your work is a broadly applicable skill and writing for popular outlets is a crucial way to reach non-specialist audiences. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of writing for nonacademic outlets and how the publishing process works. Participants will discuss strategies for developing writing skills, such as cultivating story ideas and crafting pitches. This workshop will be led by Dr. Anya Gruber, who holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology, participated in the inaugural year of SAPIENS magazine’s Public Scholars Fellowship Program, and has written for popular outlets such as Atlas Obscura and American Archaeology. Dr. Gruber is currently the Public Engagement Specialist for the Center for Research on Programmable Plant Systems (CROPPS) at Cornell and is a Visiting Fellow with CIAMS.
