About this Event
Please join us for the 4th event in our CHE 100 Film Series, celebrating the 100th birthday of the College of Human Ecology, a screening of four short films that address sustainability issues in textiles, apparel, and fashion, followed by discussion with the filmmakers. We will be screening: The Color Seekers: Stories from the Natural Dye Movement (12 minutes, directed by Kelsie Doty), a documentary that delves into the use of natural dyes in the U.S. fashion industry, featuring interviews with textile companies, fashion designers, plant growers, and dyers; Wash & Reuse: Textiles in the Hospital Setting (9 minutes, directed by Denise Green, produced by Susan B. Kaiser and Gang Sun), which tells the story of one of the few remaining hospitals in the United States with an in-house laundering facility for reusable linens, gowns and surgical drapes; Sustainable Studio Visit: 3 Women (11 minutes, directed by Kat Roberts), where co-founders Crystal Lee Early and Natalie Mumford of the vintage and upcycled fashion brand 3 Women discuss how they started their business and the vintage textiles that inspire their designs; and a rough cut of a film-in-process, Clothed by County (~5 minutes, directed by Shawkay Ottmann), a documentary about how Australian Indigenous designers and artists are reclaiming traditional land-based fashion practices to create contemporary adornment that connects community and culture. A brief Q&A with the filmmakers will follow each screening and a panel discussion will take place after all four films have screened.
Panelists: Kelsie Doty, Verna Sullivan-Marler Assistant Professor in Fashion Studies, Kansas State University; Kat Roberts, Adjunct Faculty at the New York City College of Technology; Shawkay Ottmann, PhD Candidate in Apparel Design, Cornell University; Denise Nicole Green, Associate Professor of Human Centered Design, Cornell University; and Susan B. Kaiser, Professor Emerita of Design, Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, and Textiles and Clothing, University of California—Davis.
