DESCRIPTION:The Pajaro Valley\, located on the Pacific Coast of Central Cal
ifornia\, is known for berry farming\, a very water intensive industry. Th
e berry industry is now in jeopardy\, as the valley’s aquifer is overdra
wn\, causing seawater intrusion which threatens to destroy freshwater reso
urces. To combat this\, Driscoll’s Berries\, the company that distribute
s most of the berries in the valley\, is actively seeking a way to reduce
the aquifer draw by analyzing alternative farming techniques. This will be
accomplished by creating a mathematical farm model and optimization strat
egy to design farming approaches that meet a sustainable water yield const
raint. Furthermore\, we consider surface water analysis as a means to supp
lement the aquifer for farming use. These results were produced at a focus
ed\, collaborative sustainability workshop at the American Institute of Ma
 thematics.
