What is the future of China’s labor movement? In the last year, strikes and protests have soared to record levels.

Along with the rise of China’s global economic power there has been a growing militancy among factory workers. In the Pearl River Delta region, China’s manufacturing industrial heartland, migrant workers share their perspectives on the struggles they face to keep factories running. China on Strike, published by Haymarket Books in April 2016, contains first-hand accounts and uncensored narratives from a new generation of workers and activists.

Join us for a Chats in the Stacks book talk with authors Eli Friedman, assistant professor of International and Comparative Labor at Cornell University’s ILR School, and Hao Ren. While working at a variety of factory jobs throughout coastal China, Hao interviewed workers in her free time to complete the book, a revealing look at the lives of workers in some of China’s most profitable factories that supply Apple, Nike, Hewlett Packard, and other multinational companies. It documents the processes of migration, worker culture, and social resistance. Coauthor Zhongjin Li is a Ph.D candidate in Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

This event is hosted by the ILR Catherwood Library. Buffalo Street Books will offer books for purchase and signing at the event.
