DESCRIPTION:In the late nineteenth century\, some of Spain's most prominent
  male writers shared a fascination with the dual nature of blood as matter
  and metaphor. In a hybrid (in-person and live-streamed)  Chats in the Sta
 cks book talk\, Julia Chang\, assistant professor of Hispanic Studies in t
 he Department of Romance Studies\, discusses her new book Blood Novels: Ge
 nder\, Caste\, and Race in Spanish Realism (University of Toronto Press\, 
 2022)\, which examines the cultural and literary significance of blood\, a
 nd challenges the dominant assumption that\, eclipsed by race and sexualit
 y\, blood no longer played a decisive role in social hierarchies in late n
 ineteenth-century Spain. While engaging with feminist theory\, theories of
  race and whiteness\, literary criticism\, and medical literature\, Chang 
 makes a case for treating blood as a critical analytic tool that challenge
 s our understanding of gendered and racialized embodiment in Spain.\n\nPro
 fessor Chang’s research and teaching areas include Spanish realism\; Fil
 -Hispanic Literature and Art\; contemporary post-migration literature\; fe
 minist and queer theory\; disability studies\; race and anti-racist pedago
 gy\; and game studies. She is a member of the core faculty in Feminist\, G
 ender\, and Sexuality Studies\, affiliated faculty in the Southeast Asia P
 rogram\, and is a CIVIC Media Fellow as well as a recent recipient of the 
 Russell Distinguished Teaching Award.  \n\nThis book talk is sponsored by
