DESCRIPTION:Chris Xu\, Professor\, School of Applied and Engineering Physic
 s\, Cornell University\n\nProfessor Chris Xu is the founding co-director o
 f Cornell Neurotech\, and the director of Cornell NeuroNex Hub\, an NSF fu
 nded center for developing and disseminating neurotechnology. Prior to Cor
 nell\, he was a member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories\, and pione
 ered breakthrough development of fiber optic communication systems. He rec
 eived his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Cornell University\, and contribut
 ed to the early development of 2-photon microscopy. His current research a
 reas are biomedical imaging and fiber optics\, with major thrusts in multi
 photon microscopy for deep brain imaging\, multiphoton microendoscopy for 
 clinical applications\, and fiber-based devices and systems for telecommun
 ications and optical imaging. His research is supported by major grants fr
 om NIH\, NSF\, DARPA\, and IARPA. Dr. Xu has chaired or served on numerous
  conference organization committees and NSF/NIH review panels. In addition
  to hundreds of journal and conference papers\, he has 32 patents granted 
 or pending. He has won the NSF CAREER award\, Bell Labs team research awar
 d\, the Tau Beta Pi Professor of the Year Award\, and two teaching excelle
 nce awards from Cornell Engineering College. He received the 2017 Cornell 
 Engineering Research Excellence Award. He is a fellow of the Optical Socie
 ty of America\, and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.\n\nIn v
 ivo deep imaging of the brain\n\nIn this talk I will discuss the fundament
 al challenges of deep tissue\, high-resolution optical imaging. New techno
 logies for in vivo structural and functional imaging of mouse brain using 
 long wavelength excitation and three-photon microscopy will be presented. 
 I will illustrate the requirements for imaging the dynamic neuronal activi
 ty at the cellular level over a large area and depth in awake and behaving
  animals\, and show applications where 3-photon microscopy outperforms con
 ventional 2-photon microscopy in both signal strength and image contrast. 
 Finally\, I will discuss several future directions\, including adaptive op
 tics and new laser sources\, to further improve the imaging depth and spee
 d in biological tissues.\n\nPoster
