The Department of Linguistics and ASL Program proudly presents Rezenet Moges-Riedel, Ed.D., from California State University, Long Beach. Dr. Moges-Riedel will present on “Looking through critical lens on Deaf communities and intersectional issues".
This workshop offers a period of self-reflection for those who are learning about Deaf and/or Disabled cultures for a greater understanding of diverse populations in signing communities of the U.S. What does intersectionality mean in the Deaf/signing communities? Frequently, the introductions of Deaf culture are based on a singular lens, which is problematic, while concentrating on only one type of oppression with audism. Thus, this workshop will present the needed resources learning about multiple oppressions/intersectionalities within Deaf and/or Disabled communities.
Rezenet Moges-Riedel, Ed.D, is an Assistant Professor and serves as a Co-Assistant Director of the ASL Linguistics and Deaf Cultures program at California State University, Long Beach. Her recent work focuses on intersectional experiences and retention of Deaf Faculty of Color, working at postsecondary institutions. Her research topics are heavily shaped by critical race theory, which she reframed "White Oralism" and "Black Deaf Gain". Her research interests also encompass in linguistic anthropological issues, such as sign language contact, demissionization, and female masculinity signing styles."
ASL/English interpretation will be provided.
