The Department of Linguistics and ASL Program proudly presents Brendan Stern, Ph.D., from Gallaudet University.  Dr. Stern will present on “United in Diversity, Disagreement, and Community: Lessons from Deaf America for Revitalizing American Democracy".

This interactive presentation explores how viewpoint diversity, constructive disagreement, and associational life strengthen democracy in the United States. Drawing upon political psychology, political sociology, and democratic theory, it argues the Deaf community offers instructive lessons and unique remedies in this age of polarization and fragmentation.

Brendan Stern, Ph.D., is an associate professor of American politics at Gallaudet University and executive director of the Center for Democracy in Deaf America (CDDA). CCDA fosters healthy democratic habits by promoting disagreement, debate, and civic engagement in American Sign Language.
