Cornell University

Dr. Susan Brown is the Herman M. Cohn Professor of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. Susan has been at Cornell since 1985 and has created and named eight sweet cherries, one tart cherry and seven apple varieties, with the managed varieties SnapDragon® and RubyFrost® being expanded and tested internationally. Susan’s talk will explain how an apple fruit variety is created and tested, and the unexpected challenges and fun in that plant world. Susan has developed some ornamental crab apple types for landscaping that will surprise attendees in how different they are from what you see in landscapes now. Apples are Susan’s passion, and she hopes you will look at apples in a different way after she presents about their natural diversity.

Susan was named a NY State Senate Woman of Distinction in 2014, was awarded the American Pomological Society’s Wilder Medal in 2016, was named a fellow of the American Society of Horticultural Sciences in 2019.
