Anti-LGBTQ Bullying: Legal Issues and Remedies
Tuesday, November 8, 2011 4pm to 5:30pm
About this Event
Cornell Law School, Myron Taylor Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA
#anti-lgbtq_bullying_legal_issues_and_remediesAn unprecedented amount of media attention has been given to LGBTQ teen suicides and bullying over the past two years.
According to a recent study done by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), severe forms of bullying, harassment and assault directed towards LGBTQ youth have not decreased over the past decade, despite increased visibility and awareness about LGBTQ issues in the United States. Rather than rely on school districts to protect these students, legal advocacy groups and even agencies within the federal government have started stepping in, using lawsuits and other legal/policy initiatives to make a positive difference.
Please join us to hear about anti-bullying legal and policy-related advocacy initiatives, from:
Matt Faiella, Staff Attorney at the Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights (OCR) and former LGBT Staff Attorney at the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU)*
Dr. Elizabethe Payne, Executive Director of the Queering Education Research Institute at Syracuse University
Food will be served!
*This panelist will be stating his own opinion, and will not be representing the Department of Education or its stance on these issues in any official capacity.
Co-sponsored by GPSAFC and is open to the Graduate Community
