An Evening at the Caffe Cino seeks to explore the legacy of the Caffe Cino as both a pioneering space of Off-Off-Broadway theatre and as a site of queer performance and queer social life. While it originally opened as and remained a coffee house, the Caffe Cino became an important theatrical venue from 1958 to 1968, premiering early plays by Sam Shepard, John Guare, and Lanford Wilson among other notable playwrights.
This project uses playwright Robert Patrick’s online archive about the Caffe Cino as source material to develop a performance that centers on the Cino’s legacy as a queer arts space.
An AGIT (Association of Graduates in Theatre) Lab production.
An Evening at the Caffe Cino is made possible in part by a grant from the Cornell Council for the Arts.
