About this Event
Cornell Center for Antimicrobial Resistance Research & Education Fall Seminar Series 2025
Title: Host metabolism balances microbial regulation of bile acid signaling
Speaker Bio: Prof. Schroeder holds positions as a Professor at the Boyce Thompson Institute and in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Schroeder’s research is dedicated to facilitating a systematic structural and functional annotation of biogenic small molecules (BSMs) in model organisms, integrating expertise in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and analytical chemistry. Combining NMR-spectroscopic and MS-based comparative metabolomics with phenotypic screens and genetic approaches, Schroeder led a comprehensive effort to characterize structures and functions of the metabolome of the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. Ongoing efforts toward a systematic characterization of the mouse metabolome, including changes in response to alteration of the composition of the gut microbiome, revealed extensive small molecule-based signaling networks that rely to a significant extent on not yet annotated BSMs. Schroeder started his professional career at Cornell University in 2007, following a postdoc and research associate appointments at Cornell University with Jerrold Meinwald and at Harvard Medical School with Jon Clardy. He has received various prestige awards including the Silverstein-Simeone Award in Chemical Ecology and a HHMI Faculty Scholar Award. He received the Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hamburg, Germany in 1998.
