About this Event
The community event "Ammons & the Falls" will celebrate A.R. Ammons’ poem "Cascadilla Falls," and the poet’s relationship with the landscape of Ithaca, NY, over the course of a late afternoon on Tuesday, April 26th.
At 4:00pm, Cornell Professor of English Roger Gilbert will gather a group at Triphammer Bridge on Cornell’s campus, to unveil a brand new display of Ammons' poem "Triphammer Bridge," funded by the Office of the Provost at Cornell University.
Gilbert will then lead the crowd across campus to unveil a second poem display, of "Cascadilla Falls," at the entrance to the gorge just outside of the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts.
At 5:00pm, the group will assemble in the Schwartz Center's Film Forum for a screening of Poetry in America's PBS episode "Cascadilla Falls," followed by a panel discussion with a mix of Cornell scientists and humanists, including: Cornell Chair of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Professor Geoffrey Abers; Director of the Paleontological Research Institution Professor Warren Allmon; Director of the Center
for Public Humanities at Arizona State University, Poetry in America host Elisa New; Amplify Education CEO (and episode guest) Larry Berger; and Cornell Professor of English Roger Gilbert.
At 6:15pm, Cornell Hunter R Rawlings III Professor of Paleontology Warren Allmon, Director of the Paleontological Research Institution and its popular Museum of the Earth, will lead a walking tour through Cascadilla Gorge Trail. Walking shoes are recommended!
