Agricultural intensification: tradeoffs or synergies with the environment and human wellbeing
Thursday, April 16, 2015 12:20pm to 1:10pm
About this Event
Recent calls for sustainable agricultural intensification strive for increased agricultural production with inclusive growth and reduced environmental impact. Such integrated goals are indeed important in efforts to feed an expanding population, yet there are few substantiated examples of how they are or are met at broad scales. Achieving these multiple goals requires a means of assessing and tracking the various components. Some programs track livelihoods (income, food security, nutritional security) through household surveys, other programs monitor crop production by field assessment or surveys, but few programs measure environmental aspects (land cover change and ecosystem services such as water and energy provision, climate forcing, and biodiversity) along with agricultural expansion or intensification. Even when all aspects are measured they are seldom done so in the same place or time – which is required to assess the combined outcomes and make informed, course corrections to move towards sustainable agricultural intensification. A sampling framework, a set of indicators, protocols for the observations, measurements and analytics to generate the indicators will be presented along with preliminary data to assess tradeoffs and synergies for informed decision making. Such a system and information are crucial as Africa moves towards its Green Revolution that encompasses the multiple dimensions of sustainable intensification.
