The early part of the twentieth century saw a surge of creative output among German artists working in an expressionist mode. In contrast to late nineteenth century impressionism, the expressionists used figural distortion, bright colors, and a bold graphic style to describe the devastating aftereffects of World War I. Working in a variety of media, these artists created powerful images depicting this volatile period in their homeland’s history. The majority of works in the exhibition are drawn from a private collection and include prints, watercolors, and paintings created between 1908 and 1930 by Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel, Ernst Kirchner, Emil Nolde, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Works included from the Museum’s collection highlight a recent gift of four prints by Beckmann.
