Ag Literacy Week is a program designed to engage 2nd graders with the agriculture around them through a book and activities based on a theme of the year. This year’s book is Tomatoes for Neela written by Padma Lakshmi. The book follows Neela, a young girl who loves cooking and writing down recipes in her notebook as it reminds her of her Paati, who lives in India. In this book, Neela learns about the large variety of tomatoes available at her local market and makes a special recipe that makes her feel connected to her Paati, even though she is far away. This book shows us how we are able to connect to other cultures and build communities through agriculture.
