2018 Agriculture Literacy Week is March 19-23rd, 2018.

Once again the NYS Farm Bureau and Cornell Cooperative Extension Oneida County are teaming up to bring Ag Literacy Week to the youth of Oneida County.

How the program works:

This year our book is geared for 1st and 2nd grade, though Kindergarten and 3rd grade classes have participated in the past.

Once your classroom has registered that they would like to participate, a volunteer will contact you to arrange a day and time to come in, read the book and do a activity. The whole program lasts from a 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. In February volunteers will be contacting teachers directly to coordinate dates and times.

The signature book for 2018 is Before We Eat From Farm to Table by Pat Brisson. In this lyrical book readers find out what must happen before food can get to our table to nourish our bodies and spirits.

This years book and lesson focuses on the diversity and breadth of agriculture industries throughout the state. Agriculture contributes over $37 billion to the New York State economy and ranks in the top ten in the nation for yogurt, apples, grapes, calves and onions, among other products. These products and industries create careers essential to the food system that are not always initially thought of: arborist, soil engineers, animal geneticists, butchers, aquaculturists, truck drivers, grocers, and more.

The lesson, activities, learning extensions, and companion resources are aligned to New York State and Common Core Learning Standards.

In the past some schools have a specific volunteer that has read to them. If you would like to request a specific reader there is an opportunity to do so.

All school requests must be in by January 16th! This allows enough time to order books, supplies and arrange volunteer readers.
