Up-Scaling the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in Tamil Nadu, India: Results from a World Bank Project

Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Mann Library, 100

Vibhu Nayar, a member of the Indian Administrative Service and a Principal Secretary in the Government of Tamil Nadu state, is currently serving as project director for the World Bank-assisted Irrigation Agriculture Modernization Project (IAMP) and had similar responsibility for its preceding IAMWARM project, both with budgets of nearly half a billion dollars.

Both projects had large components for introducing and extending SRI within the irrigation systems in Tamil Nadu. Its productivity increases and water-saving have justified making SRI a state agricultural program. Nayar will discuss how and why SRI was scaled up in 75% of the project areas. He is a member of the UN’s International Steering Committee on Global Water Operators Partnerships (GWOPA) and founder-secretary of the Indian National Change Management Forum which was established to improve governance and service delivery.
