The War on Terror: A Look at America's Frontline Ally

Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Malott Hall, Bache Auditorium

For the last decade and more, Pakistan-US relations have been primarily shaped by the ongoing 'War on Terror'. Pakistan formally allied itself with the US under diplomatic pressure soon after the 9/11 attacks, and has since been a key player in the Afghan war. Pakistan provided the crucial land route to NATO's supply line leading to Afghanistan, and has also at times allowed US air force bases to operate in the country.

14 years since 9/11, as US strategy towards the Afghan Taliban shifts from a military offensive to negotiations and even reconciliation, where does Pakistan stand? The answer to this question is crucial for the long-term stability of the country as well as the region, which continues to live with the fallout of the Afghan war.

How has the War on Terror shaped US-Pak relations? With the impending withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan, what role will Pakistan play in the region henceforth?

This speaker series aims to highlight the dynamics of US-Pakistan relations by analyzing Pakistan’s role in the War on Terror and exploring the future of Pakistan and the region.
