Filmscreening following by Q & A with filmmaker Luis ArguetaModerator: Mary Jo Dudley, Cornell Farmworker Program
From award-winning director Luis Argueta, The U-Turn narrates the transformational journey of the immigrant workers who broke the silence about the abuses they endured at the Agriprocessors meatpacking plant in Postville Iowa and the community that would not abandon them. As the third documentary film in Luis Argueta’s Immigration Trilogy, The U-Turn sheds light upon the U-Visa, an immigration relief -part of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)- in much need of dissemination and understanding by immigrant workers, immigration rights-advocates and law enforcement.
About the director:
Luis Argueta is a Guatemalan-American film director and producer. His 1994 film, The Silence of Neto, a coming-of-age film set in Cold War-era Guatemala, was the first Guatemalan film to be internationally recognized. For the past 8 years Argueta has dedicated his life to producing a trilogy of documentaries (Abused: The Postville Raid (2010), Abrazos (2014), and now The U-Turn) that present the human face of immigration and aim to contribute to the national and international conversation on one of the most important topics of our time. The Guardian listed Mr. Argueta as one of Guatemala’s national living icons, alongside Nobel Laureate Rigoberta Menchu and singer/songwriter Ricardo Arjona. In August of 2015, Luis Argueta was awarded the Order of Quetzal in the degree of Grand Officer, the highest honor given by Guatemala.
