Recent years have witnessed an increased understanding and appreciation for the need to approach public health problems like obesity by thinking about the complex, multi-level systems that shape human behavior and health-related outcomes. Effective communication with both the general public and key decision makers about these complex systems and multi-level influences poses significant challenges. In this talk, Dr. Niederdeppe will describe some of these challenges and offer thoughts about potential solutions. Specifically, he will describe three recent research projects that attempt to enhance understanding of complex health issues like diet and obesity through the use of short narratives or case studies to re-frame and re-conceptualize these issues.
