Strong in the Rain: Miyazawa Kenji, Tohoku, 3.11 and the Survival of Japan

A talk on the broad circumstances in which Japan finds itself today. Australian author, playwright, theatre director, and translator, Roger Pulvers has been active in Japanese and Australian theatre and media for nearly forty years. This spring Pulvers has won the 19th Noma Award for Translation of Japanese Literature for his translation of Miyazawa Kenji's poems Strong in the Rain: Selected Poems (2007, Bloodaxe Books) and will be receiving the Kodansha Ltd. award September 16 in New York city. Pulvers' award is the first time since 2003 that an English-language book has won the biannual Noma prize.
