Shelly Silver Lecture: Watch

Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 5:15pm to 7:00pm

Milstein Hall, Abby and Howard Milstein Auditorium
943 University Ave, Ithaca, NY 14850, USA

Since the early 1990s, Shelly Silver's (B.F.A./B.A. ’85) moving and still image work has commented on how we construct personal relationships within society, intertwining documentary and fictions in a signature style that recalibrates filmic conventions, explores the construction of character, and considers the delicate relationship between fantasy and physical location.

Her work has been exhibited works throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia at venues such as MoMA, New York City; MOCA Los Angeles; the Pompidou Centre, Paris; the Kyoto Museum, Japan; the Institute of Contemporary Art in London and New York City; and the Berlin and Singapore Film Festivals. Sliver has received awards, fellowships, and grants from such institutions as the National Endowment of the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, the New York Film Academy, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Japan Foundation, and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst. She currently lives in New York City where she is chair of visual arts at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.

Silver was born in Brooklyn and received a bachelor of arts (College Scholar) and a bachelor of fine arts in mixed media from Cornell. Silver subsequently attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program.
