Scottish Legend Archie Fisher in Concert
Saturday, February 11 at 8:00pm to 10:30pm
Goldwin Smith Hall, Hollis Cornell Auditorium 232 East Ave, Central Campus
Archie Fisher is a legend in the world of Scottish folk music for songs both traditional and his own, but happy to stay below the radar despite his Scots Hall of Fame and MBE. His warm, craggy voice and simple but masterful guitar accompaniment have an inimitable spirit. In the 60s in Edinburgh, he formed the Fisher Family band with his parents, sisters Ray and Cilla, and Artie Tresize, and hosted a club where he played with the likes of Bert Jansch and Robin Williamson. He went on to run the Edinburgh Folk Festival (1988-1992) and the beloved Travelling Folk program for BBC Radio Scotland (1983-2010). It is no small sign of respect that the only songs recorded by the late great Stan Rogers that he did not write himself were written by Archie Fisher: Witch of the Westmerlands, Final Trawl, and Dark-eyed Molly. The ballads on Fisher’s latest CD, Windward Away, breathe the wild beauty of the Scottish Borderlands. In recent years, he has toured Canada (and rarely the States) both solo and with John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Garnet Rogers, and James Keelaghan. Throughout a career of making and fostering music, Archie Fisher has remained a quiet giant.
