SAP Seminar Series: "Home in the City, Bombay 1977" Sooni Taraporevala

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 4:30pm to 6:00pm

Mann Library, 102
Cornell University Mann Library, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA

Sooni Taraporevala will be showing images from her recently launched book Home in the City Bombay 1977 - Mumbai 2017 and speaking about them in the context of both photography and social history. The book has illuminating texts by Pico Iyer and Salman Rushdie, as well as a candid conversation between Taraporevala and Siddharth Dhanwant Shanghvi.

Sooni Taraporevala’s arresting black and white photographs, cutting across class and community lines, are an insider’s affectionate view of the city she considers home. Capturing life in Bombay/Mumbai from 1977 to the present day, the images - complex and intimate, quirky and quotidian - celebrate the odd and everyday character of a city as its shape shifted over four decades and are a significant documentation of one of India’s most diverse cities.
