Overview of the Publishing Landscape with Literary Agent Janet Silver

Janet Silver is an agent representing literary fiction, poets, memoir and creative nonfiction.
She will present an overview of the publishing landscape, speaking from her experience as agent, publisher and editor, and then invite you to ask specific questions about your projects!

Janet Silver represents award-winning writers of literary fiction and creative/narrative nonfiction. Her client Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, Wild, was a #1 New York Times bestseller and has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide. Anthony Marra’s novel A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, also a New York Times bestseller, won numerous prizes, including two National Book Critics Circle Awards and the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award. Janet’s client Monique Truong is the author of the novel The Book of Salt, which won the Asian American Literary Award and has been published in fifteen countries; and Hanna Pylväinin received a Whiting Writers Award for her novel We Sinners.
 
Janet’s clients benefit from her in-depth knowledge of the publishing industry and extensive editorial experience. Before joining Aevitas, she was Publisher at Houghton Mifflin Company, where she worked with such renowned authors as Philip Roth, Tim O’Brien, John Edgar Wideman and Jonathan Safran Foer.  At Houghton, she launched the careers of many acclaimed writers, including Jhumpa Lahiri, winner of the Pulitzer Prize.
 
Janet has been a trustee of the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center and is on the advisory board of Ploughshares magazine. In both fiction and nonfiction, she seeks out diverse, distinctive voices, compelling storylines, unique perspectives – and great writing! Based in Boston, she travels regularly to New York.
