“Did the Galactic Polity Ever Stop Pulsating? Reflections on Egalitarianism and Authoritarianism in Bangkok.”
The speaker is a social anthropologist who has studied community resilience and resistance in Thailand. The community he describes in this talk has invoked a vision of old Siam/Thailand that has allowed it to deflect official attempts at evicting it for about a quarter of a century, and the speaker will ask what consequences this unusual case has for understanding political conflict in Thailand today. The speaker’s engagement in this project sprang from his interest in the social impact of historic conservation and the relationship between architectural remains and historical memory; the physical site itself expresses the tension between the two visions of the Thai polity.
Herzfeld is a Professor of the Social Sciences in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University.
This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the talk.
Thank you to the Southeast Asia Program (SEAP) for co-sponsoring this event.
