Uris Clock Tower
A memorial chimes concert will be held on June 21 at 6 pm at the Cornell bell tower to mark the 50th anniversary of the murders of Michael Schwerner, ’61, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman. They were killed in Mississippi on June 21, 1964, while working as civil rights activists in a voter registration campaign.
The half-hour concert commemorates their commitment to the cause of equality for which they gave their lives. The following songs will be featured:
We Shall Overcome
Lift Every Voice and Sing
Blowing in the Wind
Sounds of Silence
America the Beautiful
Precious Lord, Take My Hand
Battle Hymn of the Republic
The concert is being sponsored by the Schwerner-Chaney-Goodman Memorial Project, which has as it goal the building of an outdoor campus memorial to these courageous civil rights activists.
