The Future of Small Scale Photovoltaic Solar Energy

A lecture by Dr. John A. Swanson '61, BME '62, MS ME '63, President, Swanson Analysis Services, Inc. and founder of ANSYS, Inc.

John Swanson is an internationally recognized authority and innovator in the application of finite-element methods to engineering.  He founded ANSYS Inc. in 1970 as Swanson Analysis Systems Inc., serving as president and CEO until 1994, when he sold the company and became chief technologist. Dr. Swanson has recently invested in Applied Quantum Technology (AQT), a California startup company with the objective of reducing the cost of PV Solar Power by another factor of two.

Swanson is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the highest honor bestowed in the field of engineering, for his development of general-purpose finite-element software used in engineering design worldwide. He has also received the William Metcalf Award from the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania and the  American Association of Engineering Societies John Fritz Medal.  He was elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and was listed in Industry Week’s “Top 5 out of Top 50 R&D Stars in the United States.”

Swanson holds a BME and MS in mechanical engineering from Cornell University and a PhD in applied mechanics from the University of Pittsburgh.
