Barry Gilder was born in South Africa in 1950. He went into exile in 1976, composed and sang struggle songs at anti-apartheid events, and served in the ANC's intelligence structures until his return to South Africa in 1991. He later became deputy head of the South African Secret Service. He was instrumental in setting up the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection and served as its Director of Operations until recently. He remains a Fellow of the Institute and currently resides in New Delhi, India. This event is part of a U.S. book tour promoting the book Songs and Secrets: South Africa from Liberation to Governance, a memoir by Barry Gilder.
