The Cornell Speech and Debate Society is one of world's leading speech and debate organizations with over 100 members and a coaching staff with 60-plus years of experience. Students - members of the society - are able to compete at the collegiate level in Worlds debate, Policy debate, and in Speech. Following the principle of being open to all students and levels of experience, Cornell Speech & Debate promotes the importance of advancing argumentation and public speaking abilities through training, mentorship, and competition. The organization also plays a vital role in promoting public discourse and civic engagement by organizing and hosting public debates on and off Cornell's Ithaca campus. Past debates have featured the British National Debate Team, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick. Off-campus, Cornell Speech & Debate partners with various education organizations and community-based not-for-profits to train youth and adults. Programs have included year-round debate clubs and classes with incarcerated youth and adults, after-school middle and high school debate programs, and an annual international summer debate camp inviting high school students from all around the world.
