Cancelled - ILR Book Project Lecture: New Institutions for a New Economic Order

Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 4:30pm to 5:30pm

Ives Hall, 305
B07 Tower Rd, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA

What would happen to organizations if everyone carried a small device that gave them instantaneous access to all the world’s information? And this mystical device made it possible to locate prices for every good and service, including prices for labor and other inputs to the firm? And it enabled competitive market platforms where buyers and sellers could compete and contract with minimal friction at any time? This talk plays out the dystopian and utopian alternatives that we now face.

Jerry Davis is the Wilbur K. Pierpont Collegiate Professor of Management at the Ross School of Business and Professor of Sociology, The University of Michigan. Davis received his PhD from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. His books include Social Movements and Organization Theory (with Doug McAdam, W. Richard Scott, and Mayer N. Zald; Cambridge University Press, 2005), Organizations and Organizing: Rational, Natural, and Open System Perspectives (with W. Richard Scott; Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007), Managed By the Markets: How Finance Reshaped America (Oxford University Press, 2009), and Changing your Company from the Inside Out: A Guide for Social Intrapreneurs (with Chris White, Harvard Business Review Press, 2015). Davis has published widely in management, sociology, and finance. He is currently Editor of the Administrative Science Quarterly and Director of the Interdisciplinary Committee on Organization Studies (ICOS) at Michigan.

Davis’s research is broadly concerned with corporate governance, finance and society, and new forms of organizations. Recent writings examine how ideas about corporate social responsibility have evolved to meet changes in the structures and geographic footprint of multinational corporations; whether "shareholder capitalism" is still a viable model for economic development; how income inequality in an economy is related to corporate size and structure; why theories about organizations do (or do not) progress; how architecture shapes social networks and innovation in organizations; why stock markets spread to some countries and not others; and whether there exist viable organizational alternatives to shareholder-owned corporations in the United States.

His latest book is The Vanishing American Corporation: Navigating the Hazards of a New Economy (Berrett-Koehler, 2016).
