Ian Svenonius is a writer and musician. Bands he has belonged to include the Make Up, Nation of Ulysses, Weird War, Chain and the Gang, XYZ, Cupid Car Club, Goon Squad, and Escape-ism. His published books are The Psychic Soviet (Drag City, 2006), Supernatural Strategies for Making a Rock 'n' Roll Group (Akashic Books, 2013), and Censorship Now!! (Akashic Books, 2015). As an essayist, his writing has been featured in Harpers, Index, Apology, Vice, New Republic, Jacobin, Dot Dot Dot, and other publications. Short films include Launching of the Dream Weapon, The Oasis Story, Rock 'n' Roll on Trial for Crimes Against Humanity, and What is a Group? Svenonius has been a featured lecturer at the Whitney Museum in New York City; Museum Ludwig, Germany; 356 Mission, Los Angeles; the Hammer, Los Angeles; Yale University; and other places. He is the impresario of happenings such as "Spilt Milk," "Cold Rice," and "Club Lip Synch." He has also hosted a talk show called Soft Focus featuring interviews with musicians Mark E. Smith, Ian Mackaye, Kim Gordon, and Genesis P-Orridge among others.
