Performances are Friday, November 1, 4:30 pm; Saturday and Sunday, November 2 & 3, 7:30 pm in Black Box Theatre, Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, 430 College Avenue, Ithaca $5; Tickets available at the Schwartz Box office, by calling 607-254-2787 or online at: www.SchwartzTickets.com.

Gruesome Playground Injuries spans thirty years in the lives Kayleen and Doug, two friends who come in and out of each other’s lives from ages 8 to 38. According to the New York Times, Gruesome Playground Injuries is “a drama dealing with the power of rituals. Each scene revolves around a new wound—whether accidental, self-inflicted or from fights with others—sustained by two emotionally damaged friends who minister to each other’s physical hurts but struggle to tend to their psychological pain.”

Chalmers, a former Resident Professional Teaching Associate at Cornell and a current Civic Leader Fellow for the Cornell Public Service Center, is “thrilled to be working with Cornell students on this challenging play.” She goes on, “Doug and Kayleen keep missing each other. They connect around their injuries and illnesses as they struggle to alleviate each other’s pain. It’s gruesome but it’s not without humor and heart. These two truly love each other.”

Aguirre says, “The play truly requires a full investment on our parts and the fact that it is challenging is what makes it such a wonderful and thrilling project.” Newkirk comments on the fact that the play skips back in forth in time and that, “as an actor it is a challenge to find the trait of whatever age the character needs to be, and quickly transition to that trait in a few minutes.”

Sarah K. Chalmers is the Director of Civic Engagement for Civic Ensemble in Ithaca and a Visiting Lecturer in the Theatre Department at Binghamton University. Most recently Chalmers directed Parent Stories for Civic Ensemble. In addition to her work with Civic Ensemble, Sarah has worked as a teaching artist for Epic Theatre Ensemble in New York and the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca. Sarah has also taught acting at Cornell University and Ithaca College. Sarah holds an M.A. in Applied Theatre from the City University of New York and a B.F.A. in Acting from Ithaca College.
