The Cornell Astronomical Society (CAS) hosts public open house nights at the Fuertes Observatory on North Campus every Friday from 8pm to midnight! Everyone -- students, faculty & staff, community members, and visitors -- is welcome to come view the Moon, planets, galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and more through the 100-year-old observatory’s historic telescopes.
Even if it is cloudy, the CAS will still open Fuertes for tours of the building and telescopes, including the 94-year-old, 15-foot-long Irving Porter Church Memorial Refractor. The observatory is also home to historic Civil Engineering equipment used in the 19th century for geodesy and timekeeping, which is on display in a museum occupying the east wing of the building.
