Expanding Horizons Series: Investigation of the Occurrence of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Tajikistan and the Factors Associated with the disease

Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 12:15pm to 1:00pm

College of Veterinary Medicine, LH 1

Veterinary student Kathryn Helmerick will present on her summer work. She says:

"I spent my summer in Dushanbe, Tajikistan investigating respiratory diseases in small ruminants. I worked closely with the Tajik National Center for Veterinary Diagnostics and my project was associated with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN. Along the way, I was also introduced to the many aspects of veterinary medicine in Tajikistan, such as the veterinary curriculum and inspection of open air food markets. While my days were spent analyzing goat and sheep serum, my evenings and weekends were full of an exciting new culture and adventure in a country that is 93% mountains! Come learn about my experiences shadowing a public health veterinarian, attending a Tajik wedding as a bridesmaid, and surviving in a country without knowing their language or alphabet."
