Providing service for people in deprived, difficult or problematic circumstances often positions them as passive recipients of the largesse of those who serve them. This presentation challenges participants to their orientation to public service. Using examples from experience with marginalized peoples in Australia and the U.S. Dr. Stringer will describe ways in which participatory approaches to action research can assist people to build the capacity to accomplish sustainable change in their own lives that is empowering, liberating and life-enhancing.
