Title:  A Million Hands:  Lessons from 25 Years of Physics Outreach

Host:  Dr. Erik Herman

Abstract:  In the 25 years that Colorado State University’s Little Shop of Physics hands-on science outreach program has been on the road, we have had over 500,000 visitors, and we have presented programs in a dozen states and on four continents. Equally importantly, we have engaged over 5,000 undergraduate students and a large number of faculty and staff in our efforts. When we engage with the broader community, the benefits, the new ideas, the new connections, flow both ways. Faculty who take part in our programs come away with an enhanced understanding of how to effectively teach complex concepts. Students who take part in developing and presenting programs develop their knowledge and their practical and communication skills. In this talk I will share the details of how we do what we do, share research results on the effectiveness of our work, and discuss how our understanding of the importance of our work has evolved over time.
