Dr. Laurie Marker
Founder of the Cheetah Conservation Fund
A. D. White Professor at Large

Dr. Laurie Marker, is the founder of the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia. CCF is promoting cheetah conservation through diverse approaches, including: improved grassland management and restoration to increase wildlife populations and improve the livelihoods of local people through improved cattle nutrition; developing a sustainable, processed biofuel from the thornscrub that has taken over much of the native grassland due to poor grazing regimes; changing farmers' perceptions of predators and promoting coexistence with livestock; developing "Cheetah Country Cheese" goat cheese products (with food science and animal science/vet needs); helping the Herero agropastoralists develop economically through sustainable livestock production (para-veterinary services and improved production practices for cattle); and development and promotion of ecotourism.
For their great work and visionary interdisciplinary approach, Laurie has been the recipient of many conservation and ecology prizes, including the 2010 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.

This lecture is funded by GPSAFC and open to the entire graduate community.
