Cornell Gamelan Ensemble; Christopher J. Miller, director, with guest Sumarsam (Ph.D. ‘92) present “Dewa Ruci,” a Javanese wayang (shadow puppet play). Part of the Cornell Modern Indonesia Projects’ conference, “Still in the Game”: The State of Indonesian Art History in the 21st Century.
Sumarsam is a scholar, puppeteer, and professor of music at Wesleyan University, and will be joined in his performance by guest artists.
A special installation of Indonesian dance masks and shadow puppets from the Museum’s collection is on view in the fifth-floor gallery for Southeast Asian art. Focusing on gifts by the late Cornell professor Benedict R. O’G. Anderson, the display was cocurated by Laurie Margot Ross, former Visiting Fellow in the Southeast Asia Program, and the Johnson’s Ellen Avril.
